Diagnosis

In 2023, Damien shared publicly that he had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). He wrote:

“My hands were my tools of creation and expression, but now, unfortunately, I am unable to use them.¹“
MND is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the nerve cells responsible for movement. Over time, it leads to muscle weakness, wasting and eventually paralysis. There is no known cure. The mind remains sharp while the body loses function, speech, swallowing, movement, breathing.²

In Australia, the average life expectancy following diagnosis is approximately 2.5 years, with about 58% of those diagnosed being under the age of 65.³

Still, with the support of carers and close friends, he kept posting. He kept sharing. MND never slowed his love of design.

Damien passed away on 3 April 2025. His funeral was held at St Philip’s Catholic Church in Blackburn North. Family, friends and community gathered to honour him.

He is survived by his wife Elle and their three sons: Levi, James and Leo. In his own words...

“they were the lights of my life.“

There’s so much more to be said about Damo, about how he approached life beyond design. His love for his family. His courage in the face of MND. But this reflection is just one lens. It’s focused on what I learnt from him as a mentor, as a designer and a friend in this industry.
